What to Consider for Sprinter Van Conversion

by | Aug 5, 2024 | Van Conversions

Finding a vehicle for sprinter van conversion isn’t enough; the vehicle should have certain features for easy conversion. Sometimes, the conversion process completes, but the converted van isn’t comfortable, or the output is not as desired. So, consider the following before you look for a vehicle for conversion.

But before that, know why a cargo van should be your choice, not a crew or passenger van.

A cargo van has a blank slate and limited features that reduce conversion costs. You can add your features and personalize the Sprinter van.  For example, you can install specific windows in a cargo van, which isn’t possible in a passenger van because windows are already there.

Most importantly, a cargo van is cheaper than crew and passenger vans.  Also, it’s easy to customize because of the blank space.

Other features to look for in sprinter jetvan conversion

. High roof

Consider investing in a vehicle with a high roof so that it’s comfortable and convenient for you to stand.  But, if parking, budget, or other issues exist, go for a vehicle with a small or medium-sized roof.  Converting them is not a big problem.

Even after adding roof insulation, the standing height in a high-roof Sprinter van is at least 6’0 feet. If you are taller, go for a Transit van, as it has the tallest high-roof conversion van in the market.

. Wheelbase options

The wheelbase of your cargo impacts both the roof and interior space.  It affects features like fans, air conditioners, and additional living areas.  So, choose the cargo van with the right wheelbase.

The build space varies with the cargo van model. For a sprinter conversion van, you can consider the Dodge Promaster that offers 8’8.3″ of buildable space in its 136″ WB model, and the 159″ WB provides 10’5, the Ford Transit that has similar measurements, with its longest version offering 12’8″, and the Mercedes Sprinter’s 170″ WB with 15’6″ of buildable space.

If you choose a short wheelbase, maneuvering is easy in urban settings. Longer wheelbase models are good for full-time travel.

. 4WD/AWD vs 2WD

As transit has become an affordable option since its release in 2020, you can opt for a 4×4 Sprinter and the AWD Ford Transit for van conversion. The performance of the 2WD version is great, especially if it’s used in snow and ice with the right wheel. Other reasons are lower initial costs, better fuel economy, and reduced maintenance.

The 4×4 Sprinter is ideal if you want off-road capabilities in your Sprinter van conversion.  The final decision depends on your requirements.

. Gas vs. Diesel

For sprinter van conversion, both gas and diesel cargo vans are ideal. Diesel engines offer longevity and higher torque and provide better fuel efficiency. On the other hand, gas engines offer faster accelerations and higher speeds but less torque. They are more affordable and widely available.

In colder areas, gas engines perform better than diesel engines. Always consider your travel plans to make the right engine choice.
